Talking Takes Off: Speech and Language at Age Two

At age two, your toddler is starting to find their voice—and their words! At UpWords Speech, we celebrate this exciting stage of rapid language development.
What to Expect:
By age 2, most children can say around 50 words and start combining 2–3 word phrases like “want cookie” or “go outside.” As they approach 3, toddlers may use 200+ words and form more complete sentences.

They can name common objects, follow two-step directions (“Get your shoes and come here”), and begin to understand basic concepts like big/little or in/on. You’ll also notice more questions—“What’s that?” becomes a favorite!

When to Seek Support:
If your child isn’t using two-word phrases by age 2.5, struggles to follow simple directions, or is difficult to understand even for familiar listeners, consider reaching out to a speech-language pathologist for guidance.
